Stryker has invested about $400 million in UK based CMR Surgical and secured an exclusive option to acquire the rest of the company. Stryker will also be the exclusive U.S. commercial agent for CMR's Versius surgical robot portfolio.
Versius is compact and modular, so hospitals do not need a dedicated operating room to use it. CMR says the deal will speed up product development and global expansion.
Why it matters: Stryker already dominates orthopedic robotics with Mako. Adding soft tissue surgery through Versius would set it up as a more direct rival to Intuitive Surgical.
