Sam Altman has confirmed that OpenAI is building its own humanoid robots and expects to show a demonstration in 2027. The first target is factory and data center work, with home chores further out.
OpenAI is hiring hardware specialists but has not shown a design, named a manufacturing partner or set a commercial launch date. Altman has argued that the AI models that sense and move matter more than the body itself.
Why it matters: OpenAI once backed humanoid startups such as Figure and 1X. Bringing the work in house puts the best known AI lab in direct competition with companies it helped fund.
