Tesla says it has started producing its Optimus humanoid robot at its Fremont, California factory, in space that used to build electric vehicles. In its third quarter shareholder letter the company called these units "the first production-quality bots that we have manufactured."
Elon Musk described it as early production and warned the ramp will be slow and "somewhat bumpy." He still claimed Tesla could reach 20,000 robots per week by the end of 2027. The news landed alongside a quarter where Tesla's profit fell 43% as spending on Optimus, AI and autonomy climbed.
Why it matters: this is the first time Tesla has said Optimus is coming off a real production line. The gap between that claim and a 20,000 per week target is the number to watch through 2027.
